Woodley remembers those who have fallen
Woodley residents pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday
Over two thousand local residents gathered at Woodley Memorial Recreation Ground on Sunday 11 November, to commemorate 100 years since the end of WWI and to remember those who have fallen.
Woodley Town Council and St John the Evangelist Church led a commemoration service and were joined by Woodley Army and Air Cadets and the 5th Woodley Scouts, who all marched to the Memorial across Woodford Park.
The Exhortation to the Fallen was read by a member of the Army Cadets, while the Kohima Epitaph was read by Town Councillor Brian Franklin. The Rolls of Honour of both World Wars were read by St John’s parishioner David Crane, followed by a prayer led by Rev Eddie Márquez-Picón, of St John’s. The laying of wreaths was led by Woodley Town Mayor, Councillor Sam Rahmouni.
Following the commemoration, tea, coffee and cake was served in the Oakwood Centre by Woodley Central WI, with cakes donated by the team, Addington School and Richard Lloyd Funeral Services. Music, poetry and footage from WWI, as well as a display of WWI images provided by Museum of Berkshire Aviation was also available at the Centre, alongside work from local schools and local Girl Guides. Woodley Flower Club donated beautiful flower displays, while Woodley Carnival Committee provided additional support.
The Council has been delighted to receive very positive feedback about the day and would like to extend its thanks to all those who attended and contributed.
Woodley schools’ memorial ceremony
Prior to the event, local Woodley schools held a memorial service at the Woodley Memorial Recreation Ground on Friday 9 November, accompanied by Woodley Town Mayor Sam Rahmouni and Deputy Mayor David Stares.
MP Matt Rodda pays his respects
Separately, MP for Reading East, Matt Rodda paid his respects at Woodley’s Memorial on Tuesday 13 November, joined by Woodley Council Leader Keith Baker. Unfortunately, Mr Rodda had been unable to attend the memorial in Woodley on Sunday 11 November due to a prior commitment at the remembrance event in Reading.

The memorial gates have been cleaned and redesigned with extra additions to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War and to remember those who have fallen.

The Council has also put up some panels detailing the history of WWI in Woodley, with stories of local soldiers who fought in WWI.

Local Woodley schools’ Remembrance
Woodley schools gather to remember
Woodley schools will be gathering at the Woodley Memorial Recreation Ground on Headley Road on Friday 9th November for a Remembrance event and to acknowledge 100 years since the end of WWI.
Joined by Woodley Town Mayor Sam Rahmouni and Deputy Town Mayor David Stares, the children will gather at 10.45 and mark the event with a minutes silence at 11.00, followed by laying of wreaths on the war memorial.

FREE Anxiety workshops for parents in Woodley
Woodley Community Youth Partnership is running workshops for parents on learning and awareness of anxiety in children and young people.

Improvements to Dinton pathways and cycle path
New shared footway and cycleway for access to Dinton Pastures and Woodley Museum of Aviation
As part of its borough-wide sustainable travel campaign ‘My Journey’, Wokingham Borough Council will start work on a new shared footway and cycleway this autumn
The new footway and cycleway will improve links between east Woodley, Dinton Pastures Country Park and Loddon Bridge and provide an alternative route to the busy Bader Way, eventually being extended to provide a direct link for cyclists to Winnersh Triangle business park and railway station.
The scheme will also improve access to Dinton Pastures and Woodley Museum of Aviation with the path being constructed with porous and sustainable materials in keeping with the country park.
Cllr Anthony Pollock, executive member for highways and transport, said, “This new footway and cycleway is a welcome addition to the borough and a step in the right direction in providing residents the tools to reduce their car travel, save money and improve their health.
“By reducing car travel we can also help to reduce congestion on Wokingham Borough roads and improve air quality around the area. This footway and cycleway is a prime example of the way in which the council is committed to providing its residents with more sustainable travel options.”
‘My Journey’ helps residents travel by modes other than single car use which is done through a range of projects, working closely with community groups, businesses and schools.
The new shared footway and cycleway will be funded by contributions from recent developments in East Woodley and construction is due to start mid-autumn.

Woodley memorial gates currently being refurbished
The Memorial Gates on the Memorial Ground have been temporarily removed for repair and refurbishment by the blacksmith who created them. These will be reinstalled in time for Remembrance on 11 November.

Revised timetable for the Little Oranges 19a/c bus service
The timetable has been amended in response to an issue with the number of passengers wanting to board Reading Buses 19b bus service from Lower Earley area.To help reduce this problem, Wokingham Borough Council discussed this with Reading Buses and some small amendments in the timetable have been made.The journey, which previously arrived at the Royal Berkshire Hospital at 0812 will now arrive at 0804 to provide some addition time for students to walk to school. In order to facilitate this amendment in the timetable, some minor timing tweaks have been made to other journeys.The changes are due to come into effect on after half-term on Monday 29th October.

Wokingham Borough Council review of polling stations
Review of Polling Districts, places and stations
Under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act 1983 and The Review of Polling Districts and Polling Places (Parliamentary Elections) Regulations 2006, Wokingham Borough Council is required to undertake a review of polling districts and polling places every five years. The review began on 1 October and will close on 16 November.
The review is required to consider the designated polling places and the boundaries of the polling districts within each ward. This review will not be looking to change ward boundaries, as these can only be modified by the Boundary Commission for England.
Wokingham Borough Council is looking for feedback on any aspect of polling districts or polling places currently used from borough residents. Local political parties and councillors will also be consulted.
