Woodley’s street concert a great success

Woodley Town Council hosted, alongside Spriggan Productions, an afternoon of entertainment and live music at Centre Stage in Woodley town centre on Saturday

Local residents were treated to an afternoon of live music from three local bands, dancing acts and circus entertainment. Held in the town centre at Centre Stage, the event started with entertainment from five dance acts, ranging from American Tribal Style bellydancing to dancing with fire. Jadoo’s Jingles, Trish Marriot as Aradia, Sandy Maya’s Belly Fairies, the Salome Sisters, Rachel Bennett’s school of bellydance and Julie Bellyfire all entertained Woodley residents throughout the four hour event, with costume changes, props and innovative and unique dance sessions, some of which were purposely non-choreographed.

Cllr Baker was very impressed with the quality of the bands and that the Council was able to host a free event for the people of Woodley and commented on how many positive comments he was receiving from residents at the event. Cllr Gilder also mentioned the positive response from local residents.

Wokingham Borough food waste

Borough food waste a great success

Wokingham Borough food waste

Wokingham Borough Council’s first month of food waste recycling has been a huge success, with residents collecting a staggering 383 tonnes of leftover food. That’s the equivalent weight of more than 54 of the biggest African elephants. In the first four weeks, each household that received a set of caddies recycled an average of six kilos.

The public have played a significant role in reducing Wokingham Borough’s carbon footprint. As a result of local people’s efforts and enthusiasm for the new food waste recycling scheme, more than 640 tonnes of polluting greenhouse gases have been prevented from entering the atmosphere through landfill. To put that into perspective, you’d have to run the average UK household for 157 years to produce 640 tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions.

Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, said: “We’ve been blown away by local residents’ enthusiasm for our new food waste recycling scheme. In just over a month people have diverted 383 tonnes of leftover food away from landfill. If you’ve not yet used your caddy, I urge you to do so and join us in our fight against food waste.”

Wokingham Borough Council’s new food waste recycling scheme also means that by mid-June the food waste collected in April will become more than 100 tonnes of compost, hundreds of litres of a productive natural fertiliser for agricultural use, as well as tonnes of harvested biogas, used as a source of renewable energy for homes and businesses.

Additional food waste bags and caddies are available at Woodley Town Council’s offices at the Oakwood Centre.

A329M road closure

A329 overnight closure

A329M road closure
There will be an overnight road closure in place on the A329(M) from Monday 3 June for 5 nights between 8pm and 6am in both directions.

During these times the A329(M) will be closed Bracknell bound from the Winnersh Triangle (showcase Cinema) junction to the M4/A329(M) On Slip, and Reading bound, between the A329(M)/ M4 Slip roads only.
This will mean that vehicles will not be able to travel along the A329(M) between Wokingham (Coppid Beach roundabout) and Winnersh in either direction. It also means that vehicles travelling towards Bracknell will not be able to join the M4 at junction 10.

These closures will enable Wokingham Borough Council contractors to undertake maintenance work in safety. During the same period, Highways England contractors will be working collaboratively with the council to also carry out their works associated with the delivery of the M4 SMART motorways project.

Woodley Town Mayor Rahmouni

Thank you to outgoing Mayor Rahmouni

Woodley Town Mayor Rahmouni

Woodley Town Council would like to express its thanks to outgoing Mayor Cllr Sam Rahmouni for all his support and hard work as Woodley Town Mayor.

Former Mayor Rahmouni’s chosen charity was the MS Society, Reading and Wokingham Districts. During his mayoral year, Cllr Rahmouni raised £1462.50 for the charity, including donations from Richard Lloyd Funeral Services and Barnes Fitness.

Richard Lloyd Funeral Services donated £100 to the Mayor’s charity when he attended the re-launch of its Woodley premises, while Barnes Fitness donated £1000 to the MS Society, Reading and Wokingham Districts in recognition of support from the Town Council and Mayor for the annual Woodley 10km and 2.5km races.

Woodley Town Council also thanks outgoing Deputy Mayor Cllr David Stares for his support.

The Town Mayor is the first citizen of the town and is elected to the post by fellow Councillors
at the Town Council’s annual meeting in May each year. The role of Mayor is a non-political
position and during the mayoral year, a Mayor puts aside council duties to concentrate on the
role as the town’s first citizen.

The Mayor chairs Council meetings and attends many functions within the town. These include
representing the Council at civic functions, receiving dignitaries, attending dinners, opening
events, talking to clubs and societies and visiting schools. The Mayor asks the Deputy Mayor
to stand in if he/she is not available.
